Immigration: Hire a Foreign Worker

Find out how to hire temporary workers, live-in caregivers, international students, permanent workers and interns. Employers’ Roadmap – This road map is a guide for employers in small to medium-sized enterprises interested in hiring foreign workers.

1) Hire a temporary worker  (www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/hire-foreign-worker/temporary.html)

Find out if you need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), how to hire workers, what to do after you hire a worker and how to extend a work permit.

2) Hire a temporary foreign worker in a high-wage or low-wage position  (www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/foreign-workers/median-wage.html)

The wage being offered for the position will determine if you need to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment under the Stream for High-wage Positions or the Stream for Low-wage Positions, each with their own requirements.

If you are offering a wage to a temporary foreign worker that is:

  • at or above the provincial or territorial median hourly wage, you must apply under the Stream for high-wage positions
  • below the provincial or territorial median hourly wage, you must apply under the Stream for low-wage positions
  • Median hourly wages by province or territory
